One unexpected benefit of my commitment to meditation is often called “waking up.”
This is a feeling of calm throughout the day, and 100% involvement in the present moment – without distractions – even when I’m not meditating. And I am convinced that anyone can experience this happiness as long as you approach your sitting training seriously.

Seriousness is the secret to developing a practice that works for you. If you are looking for happiness, personal growth, spiritual development, enlightenmentor whatever other names this state of pure and present existence is called, meditation will end your search.

But I’m not just talking about a meditative practice that you take or leave on your daily schedule. I am referring to a lifelong commitment to this practice.
If you are looking for a real personal transformation, you will inevitably have to forgo any activities that prevent you from indulging in a regular sitting practice; It should rise to the top of your to-do list. Only when you do this will you experience the long-term benefits of this practice.

In order to make meditation an essential part of your personality, you may have to give up activities – or perhaps even less of them. You may have to give up on other goals in your life — or perhaps extend their schedules.
Sometimes, even when you’re tired and have no motivation to sit down, you’ll do it anyway. Like anything worthwhile in life, like an advanced professional degree, an athletic achievement, or a great relationship, the more time and focus you invest, the more benefit you’ll realize.
