Overview of Xofluza, First New FDA-Approved Drug for Flu Treatment in 20 Years

Xofluza was evaluated in two randomized controlled clinical trials.

Results from both studies showed that Xofluza significantly reduced the amount of time participants experienced flu symptoms compared to placebo. Specifically, the duration of influenza symptoms has been reduced to just 2.3 days For those who took Xofluza, compared to 3.3 days for those who took a placebo. (1,2)

In the second study, treatment with Xofluza yielded nearly identical results as treatment with Tamiflu. (2)

Tell your doctor about your current and previous medical conditions before using Xofluza.

You should know that a serious bacterial infection can occur while you have the flu. Xofluza has not been shown to prevent these types of infections. Your doctor will need to give you another medicine if you develop these complications.

It is not known whether Xofluza can harm an unborn baby or if it passes through breast milk. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding a baby before taking Xofluza.

Xofluza should not be given to anyone younger than 12 years old or weighing less than 88 pounds.

Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking before starting Xofluza. This includes over-the-counter and prescription medications, vitamins and nutritional supplements.

You should not take Xofluza with dairy products, calcium-fortified beverages, antacids, laxatives, or nutritional supplements that contain iron, selenium, calcium, zinc, or magnesium.

Tell your healthcare provider that you took Xofluza before receiving the live flu vaccine. (5)

Possible general health benefits

Treating influenza with medicines such as Xofluza may help the general public by shortening the time during which the infection is contagious.

Also, it is important that there are more options for targeting different types of influenza. Xofluza may be a suitable solution for strains of influenza that have become resistant to Tamiflu. (4)

Schaffner notes that Xofluza can particularly benefit populations at risk of developing a severe or life-threatening case of influenza.

“Anyone who is older or has a chronic illness, if you hear there’s a flu outbreak in the city, and you have symptoms, talk to your doctor about whether this is a good drug to take,” he says.
