Can a Low-Carb Diet Lead to a Heart Rhythm Disorder?

Reducing carbohydrates is a common and often effective way to lose weight. But scientists recently discovered that eating low amounts of carbohydrates may negatively affect the heart.

A study will be presented in the future The 68th Annual Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology (March 16-18) It found that individuals who significantly restricted their carbohydrate intake were more likely to develop atrial fibrillation (atrial fibrillation). This arrhythmia, or arrhythmia, can cause the organ to palpitate too quickly and impair the function of the upper and lower chambers.

“Because low-carb diets are associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation, regardless of the type of protein or fat used to replace carbohydrates, this popular method of weight control should be recommended with caution,” says the study’s lead author. Xiaodong Zhuang, MDa cardiologist at the Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China.

Zhuang and colleagues analyzed data on nearly 14,000 individuals who did not have atrial fibrillation when they originally signed up for The National Institutes of Health study, that lasted from 1985 to 2006. During an average follow-up of 22 years, about 1,900 participants developed arrhythmias.
