Are You at Risk for a Violent Sleep Disorder?

For people with REM sleep behavior disorder, violent actions, such as punching, kicking, and screaming, can be a frequent part of their nighttime sleep. But who is most at risk of developing this condition and why?

new The study was published online on December 26, 2018 in the journal NeurologyThe Medical Journal of the American Academy of Neurology found that men, smokers, heavy drinkers, those who use antidepressants or have mental health problems are more likely to be physically attacked while they sleep. The disorder may also be an early sign of neurological problems in the future.

“The most important thing about REM sleep behavior disorder is not the sleep disorder per se, but the fact that it is an early sign of Parkinson’s disease and related disorders. [such as Lewy body dementia]’, says the study’s author Ronald Postoma, MDof McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and a member of the American Academy of Neurology.
